Actress. Symona Boniface began her career in the theatre, where she produced and wrote plays in addition to acting. In the 1920s she entered film, where at first she had bit or uncredited parts, and occasionally a meatier supporting role. Her most important early role was in the 1931 feature ‘Dragnet Patrol.’ In 1934 she signed a contract with Columbia Pictures, where she appeared in many of their short subjects. She appeared as a supporting player and character actress to such comedians as Andy Clyde, Hugh Herbert, Polly Moran, El Brendel, Sterling Holloway, Roscoe Karns, and, most famously, the Three Stooges. Among these shorts were ‘Pardon My Scotch’ (1935), ‘Slippery Silks’ (1936), ‘Ankles Away’ (1938), ‘Tassels in the Air’ (1938), ‘Calling All Curs’ (1939), ‘No Census, No Feeling’ (1940), ‘The Blitz Kiss’ (1941), ‘An Ache in Every Stake’ (1941), ‘Pitchin’ in the Kitchen’ (1943), ‘Spook Louder’ (1943), ‘Strife of the Party’ (1944), ‘High Blood Pleasure’ (1945), ‘Slappily Married’ (1946), ‘Heavenly Daze’ (1948), ‘A Pinch in Time’ (1948), and ‘Vagabond Loafers’ (1949). Most frequently she was cast as a party guest, a haughty high-society matron, or a domineering mother-in-law. During her tenure at Columbia she also occasionally appeared in bit roles in feature length films at other studios, among them ‘Women Are Like That’ (1938), ‘Ninotchka’ (1939), ‘Girls’ Dormitory’ (1936), ‘Her Highness and the Bellboy’ (1945), and ‘The Man from Colorado’ (1948). Although she died in 1950, she was still appearing in short subjects at Columbia as late as 1958, via stock footage from years earlier.
