Manson Family Member, Murderer. Born in San Gabriel California, Susan Denise Atkins was the second of three children born to Edward and Jeanette Atkins. Susan Atkins became a follower of Charles Manson, where she was known as Sadie Mae Glutz, in 1967. She was one of the responsible parties in the 1969 Tate-LaBianca murders, and was convicted on March 29, 1971. Originally she had been given the death penalty, but that was commuted to life in prison after the California Supreme Court’s People v. Anderson decision. Susan Atkins was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2008, she had undergone a leg amputation and was given only a few months to live. She was transfered back to the Central California Women’ Facility which has a skilled nursing facility at Chowchilla one year before she died. She was denied parole at a hearing on September 2, 2009. Susan Atkins had married twice while in prison and at the time of her death she was married to attorney James Whitehouse, who she married in 1987. She had also had a son in 1968 named Zezozose Zadfrack Glutz, who was later adopted and renamed.
