Mariam Fakhr Al Din (Mariam Fakhr Al Din)

Mariam Fakhr Al Din

Actress. Called “the most beautiful woman in Egypt”, she is remembered for her hundreds of cinematic roles. Born to an Egyptian father and a Hungarian mother, she was educated in Germany and early-on attracted attention for her good looks. After posing for the French magazine “Images”, she made her 1951 silver screen bow in “A Night of Love”. Over the next five decades, Mariam, helped along by her ability to speak Arabic, Hungarian, English, German, French, and Italian, amassed around 200 credits, her more noted appearances including “Back Again” (1958), the 1959 “Light in the Night”, 1963’s “Soft Hands”, and the 1970 “Souq al-harim”. Married twice to show business personalities, she saw both unions fail and kept busy until well into her 70’s, her final performance coming in the 2007 “Whatever Lola Wants”. Mariam suffered a protracted final illness and died of the complications of brain surgery. Her last name is rendered variously as ‘Fakhr Eddine’ or ‘Fakhr El-Deen’. (bio by: Bob Hufford)
