Leopold de Rothschild

British Banker. The 3rd son and youngest child of British banker and politician Lionel de Rothschild, he came from a prestigious and wealthy Jewish family whose banking roots went back to Germany in the 1760s. He received his education at King’s College School in London, England and Trinity College in Cambridge, England. He then entered his father’s banking business N M Rothschild and upon the death of his uncle, Baron Mayer de Rothschild in 1874, he became head of the family’s banking business in London and took over most of his uncle’s public offices. A thoroughbred race horse breeder, he established Southcourt Stud in Southcote, Bedfordshire, England, and owned some of the finest thoroughbreds in Europe that won many prestigious races, including the Epsom Derby, St. Leger Stakes and the 2,000 Guineas. His public service includes a Deputy Lieutenant and a Justice of the Peace for the English county of Buckinghamshire. In 1905 he became commander of the Royal Victorian Order and was also active in several Anglo-Jewish community affairs. In 1912 he survived an assassination attempt when a William Tebbit shot at his car with a revolver. He died in London, England at the age of 71.
