Julio Alejandro Castro

Author. He was born in Huesca, Aragón, Spain. He is one of the best spanish screenwriters. He is fondly remembered for his works for the motion picture director Luis Buñuel. In his youth, he was friend of the writer Antonio Machado. His first book was “La Voz Apasionada”(1932). Loyal to the Spanish Government, during Spanish Civil War, he was forced to exile. In the 40s, he moved to Mexico, Argentina and Chile, where he continued his work as writer, publishing among others “El Pozo,” ” La Familia Kasbin,” “Shanghai-San Francisco,” “El Termómetro Marca 40” and “La Casa sin Música.” In 1945, he wrote his first script for the cinema, beginning a prolific career that spent more than 40 years. For Luis Buñuel, he wrote some of his best screenplays such as “Tristana” (1970), “Viridiana” (1961), “Nazarín” (1959), “Abismos de Pasión” (1954) and “Simón del Desierto” (1965). In his last years, he wrote “Breviario de los Chilindrones” and “La Llama Fría.” He died in his house in Xàbia, Comunidad Valenciana, while he talked with the writers Manuel Vicent and David Trueba. Also he was the production designer in the films “Pedro Páramo” and “El Ángel Exterminador.” Other of his films “El Caso de la Mujer Asesinadita” (1955), “La Torre de Márfil” (1958), “Azahares Rojos” (1961), “El Tejedor de Milagros” (1962) and “Días de Otoño” (1963).
