Ivan Cleveland Rand

Canadian Supreme Court Justice, Educator. Rand was educated at Mount Allison University and Harvard Law School. He joined the Canadian National Railways as counsel in 1920. Four years later he was named Attorney General of New Brunswick and was a member of the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick. April 22, 1943, he was appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada. In 1945, he developed the famous Rand formula which significantly shaped modern Canadian labor relations. Rand was Canada’s appointee to the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine following World War II, visiting Mandatory Palestine in 1947. He became a key supporter of Partition, guiding UNSCOP’s majority report which lead to the creation of the State of Israel. Rand retired from the Supreme Court, April 27, 1959 and went on to create the law school of the University of Western Ontario where he served as the first Dean until 1964.
