Harry Chandler

Entrepreneur. In the early 1880s, he moved to California, where he worked outside as a fruit picker in the San Fernando Valley. From the fruit fields, he started a small delivery company that soon became responsible for delivering many of the city’s morning newspapers. He eventually bought a newspaper circulation route which got him hired by General Harrison Gray Otis, owner of the Los Angeles Times and later he became circulation manager of the newspaper. Following the death of Otis, Chandler became the  publisher of the Los Angeles Times and soon was the chairman of the board of Times-Mirror Company. Under his reins as publisher of the Times, the newspaper came to led all other American newspapers in advertising space and the amount of classified ads. Branching into real estate, he became the leading citizen of Los Angeles in the first half of the 20th Century, as a community builder and speculator. He was noted for the development of Hollywood Hills, the San Fernando Valley, the Los Angeles Art Association, Los Angeles Colisem, San Pedro Harbor and many others.
