George Grosz

Arist. A German painter and graphic artist, he was a founding member of the German Dada Group with artists such as Max Ernst, Kurt Schwitters and Otto Dix. After studying art in Dresden and Berlin, Grosz began contributing cartoons to different newspapers. During the 1st World War he tried to commit suicide, after then he has been suffered for a long time from shell-shock. In his whole life he kept protesting against every war, so in 1932 from the inchoate Nazi Germany he had to move to the USA. He returned to Germany only in 1959, in the year of his death. His collected drawings was published in 1921 and 1927 (“The Face of the Ruling Class”, “Ecce Homo”). His memoirs, “The Autography of George Grosz” was published in 1955. (bio by: Apats)
