Gaetano Reina, 40 years old, a wealthy wholesale ice dealer, was shot and killed by one of two uni- dentified men last night as he emerged from an apartment house at 1,521 Sheridan Avenue, the Bronx, where, according to the police, he and a woman had maintained an apartment as Mr. and Mrs. James Ennis. Reina owned an elaborate private house at 3,183 Rochambeau Avenue, where he lived with his wife and nine children. Mrs. Reina told the police of the Tremont Avenue station that she had had no knowledge of her husband’s alleged association with another woman. Reina’s assailant used a double- barreled shotgun which sent ten slugs into the ice dealer’s body. After the shooting the gunman, flinging his weapon underneath a parked auto- mobile, fled with his companion. Reina’s business offices are at the corner of 170th Street and Jerome Avenue, where about two weeks ago an ex-convict and a young woman companion were mysteriously shot and killed. Mrs. Ennis told Assistant District Attorney George de Luca and Deputy Police Commissioner Mulrooney last night that she and Reina formerly had an apartment on the Grand Concourse and that they took an apartment at the Sheridan Avenue address about five months ago. She said she is a widow. In Reina’s auto the police said they found a loaded rifle and two boxes of cartridges. His pockets contained $804 in cash and a revolver, for which he had a permit. Detective Dominick Caso, working on the case, advanced the theory that Reina may have been shot by some one who had been connected several years ago with the Barnett Baff murder case. Reina, who had been a poultry dealer, was indicted for the murder but the indictment was quashed when he turned State’s witness. Several men received long- term sentences when the trial ended. The murder grew out of a poultry- men’s feud.
