Actress. Estelle Evans was most famous for her role in the movie “To Kill a Mockingbird”, (1962), as “Calpurnia”. She was born Estelle Rolle on October 1, 1906 in the New Providence District of the Bahamas to parents Jonathan and Elizabeth Rolle (née Dames). She was the eldest of eighteen children. Before acting, she was an acting teacher in New York for nearly two decades. Her acting career began in 1948 in the movie “The Quiet One” as a small role as the mother. Over the course of 37 years, she only had 10 acting credits including “The Quiet One”. Those include seven movies; “The Quiet One”, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, (1962), “The Learning Tree”, (1969), “A Piece of the Action”, (1977), See China and Die”, (TV Movie, 1981), “The Clairvoyant”, (1982), and “Tales of the Unknown South”, (TV Movie, 1984), and three television appearances on “Naked City”, (1963), “Good Times”, (1975), and “The Jeffersons”, (1975). She was married once to William Evans. The two had three daughters; Eliza, Ella, and Estella. She was also a lifelong Freemason. She died on July 20, 1985 in New York City. She was 78 years old. Some of her other syblings included actresses Rosanna Carter and Esther Rolle who both survived her in death and who are also both deceased.
