Dr Franklin Miles

Medical Entrepreneur. He was the founder and president of the present-day Miles Laboratories in Elkhart IN, which is world famous for the manufacturing and distribution of over-the-counter medical products such as Alka-Seltzer, Flintstone Vitamins, One-A-Day Vitamins, and Bactine. Originally intending to embark in the practice of law, he attended Columbia College in New York NY but changed his mind and entered medical school at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and graduated from Rush Medical College at Chicago IL in 1874. Shortly after graduation, he established a medical practice in Chicago IL but moved it to Elkhart IN in 1875. In 1885 he founded the Dr. Miles Medical Company to sell various medical products he had discovered while in the general practice of medicine. This company eventually evolved into Miles Laboratories.  In 1906 when his health was deteriorating, he moved to Florida in an effort to regain it, purchasing 10,000 acres along the Caloosahatchee River near Ft. Myers where he became a farmer, experimenting in the scientific production of different fruits and vegetables.  He was the author of many scientific treatises on the eye, brain, heart, and nervous system.
