Charles E. Scripps

Media Mogul. He was known as the newspaperman’s newspaperman. He was the grandson of E.W. Scripps who founded in 1878, the newspaper that grew into the Cincinnati based media enterprise, The E.W. Scripps Company. As board chairman from 1953 to 1994, he presided over the company’s growth as a newspaper publisher into other forms of media, including broadcast television, cable TV systems, cable TV networks and the Internet. In 1986, he bought seven West Coast newspapers merging with the East Coast making the company the largest media holding business in the country. From 1948 to 2004, he simultaneously served as trustee of E.W. Scripps, controlling shareholder of company and as chairman of the Trust financial growth. As president of the Inter-American Press Association in the 1980s, he traveled to Mexico, Austria, France and the Soviet Union to promote freedom of the press throughout the world. In 1983, he received an honorary doctorate from Ohio University for his contributions to communications. He has been honored by the National Jewish Hospital and Research Center, the American Advertising Foundation and received The William Booth Award in 1988.
