Welsh Singer and Songwriter. She was a Welsh singer and songwriter whose powerful, husky voice made her one of the most recognizable vocalists in popular music. Raised in a working-class family, she was one of six children and developed a passion for music at an early age. After winning a local talent competition in the late 1960s, she pursued a professional singing career and adopted the stage name Bonnie Tyler. Tyler first gained international attention in the mid-to late 1970s with singles including “Lost in France,” “More Than a Lover,” and the worldwide hit “It’s a Heartache,” which topped the charts in several countries and established her as a major recording artist. Following surgery to remove vocal cord nodules in 1977, her voice developed the distinctive raspy quality that became her trademark. Her greatest commercial success came in the 1980s through her collaboration with songwriter and record producer Jim Steinman. In 1983, she released “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” which topped the charts in numerous countries, including the United States, and became one of the defining pop songs of the decade. The accompanying album, Faster Than the Speed of Night, was also a major success. She followed with another enduring hit, “Holding Out for a Hero,” released in 1984, which became widely known through its use in films, television, and popular culture. Throughout a career spanning more than five decades, Tyler released numerous albums, toured internationally, and remained especially popular across Europe. In 2013, she represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song “Believe in Me.” In recognition of her contributions to music, she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2022. In 2023, she published her autobiography, Straight from the Heart, in which she recounted her life, career, marriage, and experiences in the music industry. She was married to Robert Sullivan from 1973 until her death. Although the couple had no children, they shared a marriage that lasted more than five decades. She died on July 8, 2026, at the age of 75, in Faro, Portugal, following complications from an illness after emergency intestinal surgery. She is remembered as one of Wales’ most successful recording artists.
