Asher Tyler

US Congressman. He graduated from Hamilton College in 1817, studied law and became a lawyer in Ellicottville, Cattaraugus County. He was Agent for the Devereaux Land Company and then the Erie Railroad, and was also involved in local politics and government. In 1842 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Whig and served one term, 1843 to 1845. He did not run for reelection in 1844 and relocated to Elmira at the end of his term in Congress. Tyler practiced law and was active in several business ventures, including railroads.  In 1848 he was one of the incorporators of a steel and iron works, the Elmira Rolling Mill Company.  After retiring to his home in Elmira he read and studied extensively,  acquiring noted expertise in the history and culture of western New York’s Native Americans.
