German painter. He was one of the leading German artists of the mid-19th century school. Born in Speyer, Bavaria, the son of a well-known archaeologist, he was educated at Düsseldorf and München. In 1857 he moved to Rome where he met model Nanna Risi, who became his lover. In later years he worked in Vienna and Venice, where he died in solitary circumstances, completely neglected by his contemporaries. (bio by: MC)
