Horace Mann

Educator. Born in Massachusetts, he was an educator and a statesman who greatly advanced the cause of universal, free, non-sectarian public schools. After graduation in 1819, he taught, studied law and entered politics, serving in the State Assembly 1827 to 1837. He was the first secretary to Massachusetts Commission to improve education and was the founding President of Antioch College, Ohio, serving from 1853 to until his death. He died in Yellow Springs, Ohio.
