Abraham Jacob “A.J.” Bogdanove

Painter, Educator. He is best known for his Maine seascapes. Bogdanove came to America on December 25, 1900 with his parents and two brothers. He won a scholarship to Cooper Union and later to Columbia University to study Art.  After graduating, he apprenticed with C.Y.Turner and F.C. Jones as a muralist, often working with the architectural firm of McKim, Meade and White. Bogdanove branched out on his own and painted murals in The Hebrew Sheltering and Guardian Society in 1912, Commercial HS in Brooklyn, NY in 1918 and 1923, Jonas Bronck School in the Bronx in 1926, and City College in 1930; all while teaching art at Townsend Harris High School and City College, raising his two sons, Nathaniel and Mendel and teaching self-defense to the New York City Police Department. He also spent two months every summer on Monhegan Island Maine painting seascapes that are still seen in galleries world-wide to this day.
