Hattie May (Hattie May)

Hattie May

Seven murder indictments were returned today against Jack McGurn and John Scalise, reputed gangsters, in connection with the slaying on St. Valentine’s Day of seven members of the “Bugs” Moran Northside gang in a beer truck garage at 2,122 North Clark Street.

Rocco Fanelli, reputed gangster, who has been held under murder charges by the police along with McGurn and Scalise, was not indicted. In the opinion of the prosecutors, the charges against Fanelli could not be substantiated.

McGurn, Scalise and Fanelli are to appear tomorrow morning before Municipal Judge Peter Schwaba for preliminary hearing.

Returning of the indictments on the eve of tomorrow’s arraignment was considered a coup on the part of the prosecutors. With the indictments voted, it is understood, the State will not have to reveal its most important testimony.

The slayers’ victims were Dr. Reinhold Schwimmer, John May, James Clark, Peter and Frank Gusenberg, brothers: Adam Heyer and Al Weinschenk.

The mothers of two of the slain men, Mrs. Josephine Schwimmer and Mrs. Anna Kalachelleck, mother of Clark, and the widow of another, Mrs. Hattie May, were among the witnesses appearing before the grand jury. Other witnesses were Henry Gusenberg, brother of the two Gusenbergs; Morris Schenck, uncle of Weinschenk; Policeman Thomas Jacobs and George A. Brichet.
