Thomas Sankara was born on December 21, 1949, in Yako, a town in what would become Burkina Faso. He rose to prominence during a transformative period in West African history, ultimately becoming President of Burkina Faso in 1983. During his four years in office, Sankara worked to reshape his nation’s future, bringing considerable energy and vision to his leadership role.

On October 15, 1987, Sankara’s life was cut short by gunshot wounds in Ouagadougou, the capital city. His sudden death marked the end of an influential chapter in Burkina Faso’s history.
