Theodosius II was born on April 11, 401, in Constantinople, inheriting a position of tremendous responsibility as a member of the imperial dynasty during a transformative period in Byzantine history. Coming of age in one of the ancient world’s greatest cities, he was shaped by the complex political and religious environment of the early fifth century, a time when the Roman Empire faced significant challenges from external pressures and internal reform.

Throughout his life, Theodosius II resided in Constantinople, the magnificent capital that had become the heart of Byzantine power and culture.
