Biography

Sukarno was born on June 6, 1901, in Surabaya, a major port city on the island of Java. He would go on to become a pivotal figure in Indonesian history, shaping the nation during one of its most transformative periods. His early life in colonial Indonesia planted the seeds for the convictions that would define his extraordinary career.

As the first President of Indonesia, Sukarno led his nation through independence and the critical years of nation-building that followed. He became a symbol of Indonesian sovereignty and worked tirelessly to unify a diverse archipelago of islands and peoples into a cohesive state. His leadership during these formative decades left an indelible mark on the country’s identity and trajectory.

Sukarno remained in Jakarta, the nation’s capital, throughout his presidency and the years following his tenure. On June 21, 1970, he passed away at the age of 68 from kidney failure. His contributions to Indonesia’s independence and early development secured his place as a towering figure in the nation’s history. He was laid to rest at the Grave of Sukarno in Blitar, East Java, where visitors continue to pay their respects to the man who fundamentally shaped modern Indonesia.
