Mu’awiya II 661 – 684
Biography
Mu’awiya II was born on March 31, 661, in Damascus, during a pivotal era of Islamic history. As a member of the Umayyad dynasty, he was born into a position of considerable prominence and responsibility. His life, though brief, placed him at the center of early Islamic governance during a formative period for the expanding caliphate.
In 683, Mu’awiya II assumed the role of caliph, a position of tremendous spiritual and political authority. His caliphate, however, would prove to be one of the shortest in Islamic history, lasting only about a year. Despite the brevity of his reign, he carried forward the duties and traditions of Umayyad leadership during a significant transitional moment.
On June 1, 684, Mu’awiya II died in Damascus at the age of twenty-three, claimed by plague. His death marked the end of a young life cut short by illness during an era when such epidemics posed grave threats to populations across the Islamic world. Though his time as caliph was brief, he remains part of the historical record of the Umayyad dynasty, remembered as one of its rulers during the formative years of Islamic civilization.
