Peter II of Russia 1715 – 1730
Biography
Peter II of Russia came into the world on October 23, 1715, in Saint Petersburg, during a transformative era in Russian history. Though his life would prove remarkably brief, he held one of Europe’s most significant titles as Emperor of Russia, a position that placed upon his young shoulders the weight of governing an expanding empire during its formative years.
His reign was marked by the complexities inherent to ruling a vast nation while still in childhood. Peter II ascended to imperial responsibilities at an age when most children are simply learning about the world around them. Despite the challenges of youth and inexperience, he represented the continuity of Russian leadership during a critical period of the nation’s development.
On January 30, 1730, Peter II’s brief life ended in Moscow, claimed by smallpox at just fourteen years of age. His passing marked the end of an era and left a profound vacancy in the succession of Russian rulers. Peter II was laid to rest in the Cathedral of the Archangel, a place of honor befitting his imperial status and the legacy he left behind, however abbreviated his time upon the throne had been.
