Philip III of France

Biography

Philip III of France was born on April 10, 1245, at Poissy Castle, entering the world as heir to one of medieval Europe’s most powerful kingdoms. He ascended to the French throne in 1270 and ruled for fifteen formative years during a dynamic period of European history. His reign represented a continuation of the Capetian dynasty’s consolidation of royal authority across France.

King Philip III’s rule spanned from 1270 until his death in 1285, a period marked by the responsibilities of governing a substantial medieval realm. His life was cut short at age forty when he died on October 12, 1285, in Perpignan, succumbing to dysentery—a common and often fatal illness of the medieval period. Despite the brevity of his reign by historical standards, he maintained the royal line and the strength of the French crown during his tenure.

Following his death, Philip III was laid to rest in the Basilica of Saint-Denis near Paris, the traditional burial place of French royalty. This interment honored his place in the distinguished lineage of French kings and ensured his memory would endure alongside his predecessors and successors in one of Christendom’s most sacred royal tombs.
