Biography

Mikhail Gorbachev was born on March 2, 1931, in the small village of Privolnoye, where he spent his early years before beginning a path that would lead him to lead the Soviet Union. His tenure as the nation’s leader from 1985 to 1991 marked a transformative period in both Soviet and world history. During these years, he introduced significant changes that reshaped the political landscape of Eastern Europe and influenced global affairs for decades to come.

Gorbachev’s leadership left an indelible mark on the twentieth century, as his policies and decisions during the late 1980s set in motion events that would fundamentally alter the course of nations. Though his time in office was relatively brief, the impact of his tenure extended far beyond his years in power, affecting generations of people across the world.

On August 30, 2022, Gorbachev passed away at the Central Clinical Hospital following complications from kidney failure. He was laid to rest at Novodevichy Cemetery in the Khamovniki District of Russia, a final resting place befitting a figure of such historical significance. His legacy continues to be studied, debated, and remembered by scholars and citizens alike.
