Biography

Henry IV was born on December 23, 1553, at Château de Pau, beginning a life that would reshape the political landscape of France and Navarre. Rising through the ranks of European nobility, he became King of Navarre in 1572, a position he held with steadfast dedication for nearly four decades. His reign extended far beyond his native kingdom when he ascended to the throne of France itself in 1589, uniting two crowns and embarking on a mission to bring stability to a kingdom fractured by religious and political turmoil.

For over two decades, Henry IV guided France through a pivotal period of his nation’s history. His rule encompassed the final years of the sixteenth century and the opening decade of the seventeenth, a transformative era that would define his legacy. On May 14, 1610, his life was cut short by a stab wound while in Paris, a tragic end to a reign that had promised enduring peace and prosperity.

Henry IV was laid to rest at the Basilica of Saint-Denis, the traditional resting place of French monarchs. His life spanned fifty-six years, leaving behind a complex and consequential legacy that would continue to influence the course of French history long after his passing.
