Biography

Edgar de Wahl was born on August 11, 1867, in Olviopol, arriving into a world of linguistic and cultural diversity that would shape his life’s work. As an Estonian teacher and linguist, he dedicated himself to the study and instruction of language, contributing to the intellectual life of his nation during a period of significant cultural development. His professional pursuits reflected a deep commitment to education and scholarly advancement during the transformative years of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

De Wahl spent much of his career in Estonia, where he engaged with the educational and linguistic communities. On March 9, 1948, Edgar de Wahl passed away in Tallinn at the age of eighty. He was laid to rest at Alexander Nevsky cemetery in Tallinn, where his memory continues to rest among other notable figures of Estonian history. His life spanned eight decades of remarkable transformation, and his dedication to language and teaching left an imprint on Estonian educational and cultural life.
