Biography
Paul von Hindenburg was born on October 2, 1847, at 6 Podgórna Street in Poznań, where his early years were shaped by his family’s Prussian heritage. Over the course of his long life, he would become one of the most significant military and political figures of his era, serving with distinction in multiple roles that shaped the course of European history during transformative decades.
His career spanned the German Empire through the turbulent Weimar period and into the Nazi era, during which he held positions of considerable authority and responsibility. As a field marshal and later as a statesman and president, Hindenburg commanded respect for his military acumen and was called upon to lead during some of Germany’s most challenging historical moments.
Hindenburg passed away on August 2, 1934, in Ogrodzieniec, succumbing to lung cancer after a life of devoted service. He was laid to rest at St. Elisabeth’s Church in Marburg, Germany, where his memory continues to be honored. His long life—spanning from the mid-nineteenth century through the early years of the Nazi regime—reflected the profound changes and complexities of modern German history.
