Bahram II 250 – 293
Biography
Bahram II ruled as the fifth emperor of the Sasanian Empire during a transformative period in Persian history. Born on January 1, 250, he ascended to one of the ancient world’s most powerful thrones and governed during the height of Sasanian influence. His reign spanned the latter half of the third century, a time when the empire faced both internal consolidation and external pressures from neighboring powers.
During his forty-three years of life, Bahram II oversaw significant developments in Sasanian administration and culture. The empire under his leadership continued to exercise considerable influence across the Near East and Central Asia. Though specific details of his daily governance remain elusive through the centuries, his reign left an indelible mark on the dynastic succession and territorial integrity of the Sasanian state.
Bahram II passed away on January 1, 293, concluding a reign that had shaped the empire’s trajectory. His legacy was honored through entombment at Naqsh-e Rustam in present-day Marvdasht County, Iran—a sacred burial ground reserved for Sasanian royalty. This necropolis, carved into the mountainside, stands as enduring testimony to his status and the reverence afforded to him by his people and descendants.
