Auguste de Marmont 1774 – 1852
Biography
Auguste de Marmont was born on July 20, 1774, in the small town of Châtillon-sur-Seine, where his family had deep roots. Rising through the ranks of the French military during a transformative era in European history, he became one of France’s most distinguished military figures, ultimately achieving the prestigious rank of Marshal of France. His career spanned decades of service to his nation during periods of considerable change and challenge.
Throughout his lifetime, Marmont earned recognition as both a capable general and a nobleman of considerable standing. His military expertise and leadership were valued across numerous campaigns and operations that defined the period. Beyond his military accomplishments, he remained connected to his native Burgundy throughout his life, a reflection of the provincial roots that shaped his character and values.
Marmont passed away on March 22, 1852, in Venice, far from his birthplace. However, his final wish to rest in his homeland was honored—he was interred in Châtillon-sur-Seine, the town where his life had begun nearly eight decades earlier. His burial there served as a symbolic return, linking the end of his distinguished journey to its humble beginnings in the French countryside.
