Abd al-Aziz Boutafliqa was born on March 2, 1937, in Oujda, beginning a life that would lead him to the highest office in his nation. Over the course of two decades, he served as President of Algeria from 1999 to 2019, a period marked by his tenure leading the country through significant political and social developments. His long presidency reflected his central role in Algerian governance during a transformative era.

On September 17, 2021, Boutafliqa passed away in Zéralda at the age of 84, his death resulting from cardiac arrest. He was laid to rest at El Alia Cemetery in Oued Smar, Algeria, where he joined the nation’s honored departed. His life spanned nearly a century of change, from his birth in the colonial period through decades of independent nation-building.
