Philip IV of Spain

Biography

Philip IV was born on April 8, 1605, at the Valladolid Royal Palace, entering the world as heir to one of Europe’s most powerful dynasties. He would go on to serve as King of Spain and Portugal, inheriting crowns that represented vast territories and considerable influence across the European continent and beyond.

On September 17, 1665, Philip IV passed away at the Cuarto bajo del Rey. His life had spanned six decades of significant historical change, during which he bore the weight of royal responsibilities and the complex demands of ruling multiple kingdoms during a transformative period in European affairs.

In keeping with the traditions of Spanish royalty, Philip IV was laid to rest in the Royal Crypt of the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, a solemn and distinguished final resting place befitting his station. This monastery, one of Spain’s most magnificent structures, became his eternal home—a monument to the grandeur and legacy of the Spanish crown he had carried throughout his reign.
