Rutherford B. Hayes was born on October 4, 1822, in Delaware, beginning a life that would lead him to the highest office in the nation. During his tenure as the 19th President of the United States from 1877 to 1881, Hayes navigated a nation still healing from civil conflict and working toward reconciliation.

Hayes spent his final years in Fremont, where he remained connected to his community and personal interests. On January 17, 1893, he passed away from a myocardial infarction at the age of seventy. His life spanned more than seven decades of American history, witnessing the nation’s growth and transformation during a formative era.

Hayes was laid to rest in the Tomb of Rutherford B. Hayes and Lucy Webb Hayes in Fremont, alongside his wife. His legacy endures as a figure from a pivotal period in American history, remembered for his service to the nation during a time of significant change and challenge.
