Biography

Zeno was born on January 1, 425, in Zenopolis, a city in the Isauria region. From modest provincial origins, he would rise to one of history’s most significant positions, leaving an indelible mark on the Byzantine Empire during a transformative period.

Throughout his life, Zeno navigated the complex political landscape of the Eastern Roman Empire, taking on responsibilities of tremendous weight and consequence. His journey from Isauria to the imperial throne reflected both personal determination and the tumultuous dynamics of Byzantine leadership during the fifth century.

Zeno spent his final years in Constantinople, the empire’s great capital, where he carried out his imperial duties until his death on April 10, 491. He died of dysentery at an advanced age, having witnessed decades of change across the empire he led. His legacy was secured through his burial at the Church of the Holy Apostles, one of Constantinople’s most sacred and prestigious sites, a final resting place befitting his station.
