Biography

Stateira lived during one of history’s most transformative periods, born in 345 BCE as the daughter of Darius III, the last king of the Achaemenid Persian Empire. Her life spanned the tumultuous years of Alexander the Great’s conquest of Persia, a time when the ancient world was being reshaped by military ambition and political upheaval. Despite her royal lineage and the significance of her era, little is recorded about her personal life, hopes, or character—a common fate for women of antiquity whose stories were often left unwritten.

Stateira died in Babylon in 322 BCE at approximately twenty-three years of age. Her death occurred during the chaotic period following Alexander’s death, when his empire was fragmenting among his generals and their competing claims. The circumstances surrounding her final years and the exact cause of her death remain unknown to history. What we do know is that she represented a bridge between the old Persian world and the new Hellenistic age that would follow.

Though her individual voice has been lost to time, Stateira’s existence reminds us of the countless lives shaped by great historical events. She lived through conquest, witnessed the fall of empires, and passed from this world before reaching old age—a daughter of kings whose story, though brief in the historical record, was part of humanity’s enduring legacy.
