Born on September 29, 85 BCE in Amiternum, he came of age during one of Rome’s most transformative periods, witnessing firsthand the political upheavals and civil conflicts that would reshape the ancient world. Throughout his life, Sallust moved between the demands of political service and the scholarly pursuit of historical writing. His perspective as someone who had engaged with Rome’s political machinery lent authenticity and depth to his accounts of the Republic’s struggles. He devoted himself to documenting and interpreting the significant events and personalities of his time, leaving behind works that would influence how later generations understood Rome’s critical transition.
