Biography

Pavel Milyukov was born on January 27, 1859, in Moscow, during a transformative period in Russian history. Throughout his life, he devoted himself to two interconnected pursuits: the study of history and service to his nation through politics. His intellectual contributions and political engagement made him a notable figure in Russian cultural and civic life during a time of significant change.

Milyukov’s career spanned decades as he worked to advance both historical scholarship and political reform. His dual expertise as both a historian and politician allowed him to bring nuanced perspective to the pressing questions of his era. He remained intellectually active and engaged with the major issues confronting Russia and Europe throughout his life.

In his later years, Milyukov found himself living in exile in France, where he continued his work until his death on March 31, 1943, in Aix-les-Bains. His final resting place became Batignolles Cemetery in Paris, a reflection of the years he spent away from his native Russia. Though far from home, Milyukov’s legacy as a historian and political voice endured, contributing to the broader understanding of Russian thought and governance during one of the nation’s most pivotal periods.
