Biography

Naguib Mahfouz was born on December 11, 1911, in the historic Cairo neighborhood of Al-Jamāliyah. Throughout his life, he became one of Egypt’s most significant literary figures, dedicating himself to the craft of writing. His work would come to embody the voice of his nation and its people during a transformative period in modern history.

Mahfouz spent much of his life in Cairo, the city that shaped his identity and inspired his writing. He observed the evolving social and political landscape of Egypt, channeling these experiences into his literary contributions. His commitment to his craft spanned decades, establishing him as a vital presence in Egyptian letters and culture.

On August 30, 2006, Mahfouz passed away in Agouza, another Cairo neighborhood, at the age of 94. He died from chronic renal insufficiency after a long life devoted to his art. Following his death, he was laid to rest in Cairo, remaining in the city he had called home throughout his remarkable life and career.
