Biography

Lucius Cornelius Cinna was a prominent Roman statesman whose influence shaped the turbulent final decades of the Republic. Born in Ancient Rome on January 1, 134 BC, he rose through the ranks of political life to achieve the highest offices of state. His career culminated in an extraordinary tenure as consul, serving in that position for four consecutive years—87, 86, 85, and 84 BC—a remarkable concentration of power during a period of significant civil unrest.

Beyond his political achievements, Cinna’s legacy was further secured through family connections of considerable importance. He became the father-in-law of Julius Caesar, linking his lineage to one of history’s most transformative figures. This familial bond reflected the intricate web of alliances that characterized Roman politics during the late Republic.

Cinna’s final years remain largely undocumented in historical records. He died on January 1, 83 BC in Ancona, having witnessed dramatic changes to Roman society during his lifetime. The exact circumstances of his death and the location of his burial have not been preserved in surviving historical accounts, leaving some aspects of his later life obscured from posterity.
