Louis I of Anjou

Biography

Louis I of Anjou was born on July 31, 1339, in Vincennes, entering a world of medieval nobility and dynastic responsibility. As Duke of Anjou, he inherited one of France’s most prominent titles and the considerable territories and influence that accompanied it. His position placed him among the realm’s most powerful lords during a period of significant political transformation in fourteenth-century Europe.

Throughout his life, Louis held the weight of noble obligations and family legacy. The duchy of Anjou represented not merely a title but a center of power and governance that demanded his attention and stewardship. His forty-five years spanned a formative era in French history, one marked by wars, shifting alliances, and the complex machinery of feudal politics.

Louis I of Anjou died on September 28, 1384, in Bisceglie, Italy, far from his birthplace. His final resting place was chosen in that southern Italian city, where he was laid to rest at Bisceglie in the Province of Barletta-Andria-Trani. His life connected the noble houses and territories of both France and Italy, reflecting the far-reaching networks of medieval aristocratic families.
