Favila of Asturias 700 – 739
Biography
Favila of Asturias was born on January 1, 700, and became king of the emerging Asturian kingdom during a transformative period in medieval Iberia. He inherited a realm still finding its footing in the early eighth century, a time when Christian kingdoms were beginning to reassert themselves following the dramatic changes of the previous decades.
During his reign, Favila worked to consolidate and strengthen the Asturian state. His rule represented an important chapter in the kingdom’s development as a center of Christian resistance and stability in the Iberian Peninsula. Though historical records from this early period are limited, his leadership contributed to the foundations upon which Asturian power would continue to grow.
On January 1, 739, at Cangues d’Onís, Favila’s life came to a tragic end when he was fatally attacked by a bear. He was just thirty-nine years old. His final resting place was the Iglesia de la Santa Cruz in Asturias, where he was honored and remembered by those who succeeded him. His legacy endured as part of the royal lineage that shaped the medieval Christian kingdoms of Spain.
