Biography

Heinrich Schliemann was born on January 6, 1822, in the small town of Neubukow, Germany. Over the course of his lifetime, he would become known as both a successful businessman and a pioneering archaeologist whose work fundamentally changed our understanding of ancient civilizations. His dual career path reflected an unusual combination of commercial acumen and intellectual curiosity, allowing him to pursue his passion for uncovering the past.

Schliemann’s contributions to archaeology left a lasting impact on the field and on our knowledge of ancient history. His work as an archaeologist helped illuminate mysteries of antiquity that had long captivated scholars and the public imagination alike. Though his life was marked by diverse pursuits across business and academia, it was ultimately his archaeological endeavors that secured his place in history.

On December 26, 1890, Schliemann passed away in Naples at the age of 68, succumbing to bacterial meningitis. In recognition of his significance and perhaps reflecting his deep connection to the ancient world he so devoted himself to studying, he was laid to rest at the First Cemetery of Athens in Greece, a fitting final resting place for a man whose life’s work had been dedicated to understanding and preserving the legacies of classical antiquity.
