Gustav IV Adolf of Sweden 1778 – 1837
Biography
Gustav IV Adolf was born on November 1, 1778, at Stockholm Palace, entering the world as a prince of Sweden during a time of significant European change. He would go on to serve as King of Sweden from 1792 until 1809, a period that witnessed considerable transformation both within his realm and across the continent. His reign spanned formative years for the Swedish nation as it navigated the complexities of international diplomacy and internal governance during the Napoleonic era.
Following his reign, Gustav IV Adolf spent his remaining years away from Sweden. He ultimately settled in St. Gallen, where he lived until his death on February 7, 1837, when he suffered a stroke. His final resting place was Riddarholm Church in Stockholm, one of Sweden’s most significant burial sites, where he was laid to rest among other notable figures in Swedish history.
