António de Oliveira Salazar was born on April 28, 1889, in the small Freguesia de Vimieiro, a child of rural Portugal whose life would come to shape the nation’s trajectory through much of the twentieth century. His journey from this modest beginning led him to serve as Prime Minister, a position of profound influence during transformative decades in Portuguese history.

Throughout his tenure in office, Salazar held significant responsibility for guiding Portugal through a complex era marked by political and social change. His leadership spanned years of considerable consequence, during which he wielded considerable authority in charting the course of national policy and international relations.

On July 27, 1970, Salazar passed away in Lisbon at the age of eighty-one, succumbing to a pulmonary embolism.
