Albert of Riga 1165 – 1229
Biography
Albert of Riga was born on January 1, 1165, in Bexhövede, a time and place far removed from the city that would define his life’s work. As a bishop, he devoted himself to spiritual leadership during a transformative period in medieval Europe. His calling took him to Riga, where he established himself as a significant religious figure, serving the growing Christian community in this Baltic region during the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries.
Throughout his tenure as bishop, Albert guided his flock with dedication and commitment to his faith. He spent the latter decades of his life in Riga, where he became deeply rooted in the community’s spiritual life. On January 24, 1229, Albert’s long life came to an end in the city he had served so faithfully. His legacy was honored through his burial at the Great Cemetery in Vidzeme Suburb, a final resting place that reflected his importance to the people of Riga and the broader religious community of his era.
