Louis V of France 967 – 987
Biography
Louis V of France was born on January 1, 967, and served as King of West Francia from 979 until his death. His reign, though brief, occurred during a pivotal period in medieval European history. He ascended to the throne at a young age and carried the responsibilities of kingship during the later years of the Carolingian dynasty’s influence.
On May 27, 987, Louis V’s life ended tragically in Compiègne following a fall from his horse. This unexpected loss marked the conclusion of his reign and, ultimately, the end of the Carolingian line of succession in West Francia. He was laid to rest at the Royal abbey of Saint-Corneille in Compiègne, a place of honor befitting his royal station.
Though his time as king was limited, Louis V remains a significant figure in the transition of medieval French governance. His death and the circumstances surrounding the succession that followed would reshape the political landscape of the region for centuries to come.
