Andronikos III of Trebizond

Biography

Andronikos III of Trebizond was born on January 1, 1310, in the historic city of Trabzon, where he would spend his entire life. As Emperor of Trebizond, he inherited a position of considerable responsibility within one of the Byzantine successor states that emerged following the Fourth Crusade’s conquest of Constantinople. Though his reign came during a turbulent period in Eastern Mediterranean history, Andronikos III held the imperial throne during his formative years.

His life was tragically brief, cut short by the bubonic plague that swept through the region in the early fourteenth century. On January 16, 1332, at just twenty-two years of age, Andronikos III died in his native Trabzon from this devastating disease. His passing marked an early end to what might have been a longer reign, leaving behind limited historical records of his specific accomplishments and reign.

Though details of his burial remain uncertain, Andronikos III remains part of the Trapezuntine imperial succession. His life, though short, connected him to one of Byzantium’s most resilient successor states during a crucial period of medieval history.
