Orestes of Macedon -410 – -395
Biography
Orestes of Macedon was born in 410 BC and served as king of Macedonia during a turbulent period in the ancient Greek world. He ascended to the throne around 400–399 BC, inheriting a kingdom navigating complex relationships with neighboring powers and internal dynastic challenges. Though his reign lasted only approximately two years, from 398–397 BC, Orestes ruled during a significant era in Macedonian history, a time when the kingdom was establishing itself as a notable force in the region.
Little is documented about the specific achievements or conflicts that defined Orestes’ time as king, yet his reign represents an important link in the succession of Macedonian rulers who gradually transformed their kingdom into a major political power. He died in Macedonia in 395 BC at approximately fifteen years old, a young man whose life was circumscribed by the demands of royal duty. Though his tenure was brief, Orestes remains part of the historical record as one of Macedonia’s early monarchs, a figure whose legacy is woven into the broader tapestry of ancient Macedonian kingship and succession.
