Johnny Clegg 1953 – 2019
Biography
Johnny Clegg was a musician and anthropologist whose life bridged two nations and whose work challenged the boundaries of culture and conscience. Born on June 7, 1953, in Bacup, England, he would become deeply rooted in South Africa, where he spent much of his creative life. His dual heritage—British by birth and South African by adoption—shaped a unique perspective that informed both his artistic and scholarly pursuits.
As a performer and researcher, Clegg dedicated himself to exploring the intersections of music and human culture. His work as an anthropologist complemented his musical career, allowing him to draw from deep wells of cultural knowledge. Beyond his artistic contributions, he emerged as a significant voice against apartheid, using his platform to advocate for justice and unity during a pivotal and painful period in South African history.
Clegg passed away on July 16, 2019, in Johannesburg, succumbing to pancreatic cancer. He was laid to rest at Westpark Cemetery in Johannesburg, the city that had become his home. His legacy endures as a testament to the power of music and scholarship in service of human dignity and social change.
