Biography

Franz Stangl was born on March 26, 1908, in Altmünster, Austria. He would later become known as an SS officer who held positions of command at two of Nazi Germany’s deadliest extermination camps during the Holocaust. His role in these institutions placed him among those responsible for the systematic murder of hundreds of thousands of people.

Stangl served as commandant first at Sobibór extermination camp and subsequently at Treblinka extermination camp. Both facilities were central to the Nazi genocide, designed specifically for mass killing. His administrative leadership during this period made him directly accountable for the functioning of these operations and the deaths that occurred within them.

After the war, Stangl attempted to rebuild his life, eventually settling in Düsseldorf, Germany. However, he remained a figure of historical record and moral accountability for his actions during the Holocaust. He died on June 28, 1971, from heart failure at age 63.
